 Taiwan's Cheng Shao-chieh became the first Taiwanese woman to win a silver medal in women's singles at the World Badminton Championships in London on Sunday, losing the final to the No.2-ranked badminton player Wang Yihan from China.

Top seeds Xiaoli Wang and Yang Yu won the women's doubles while Cai Yun and Haifeng Fu won the men's doubles gold.

Olympic champion Lin Dan had a thrilling preparation for the defence of his title at next year's Games here when he saved two match points to beat top-seeded Lee Chong Wei in a sensational world championship final on Sunday. Lin Dan of China has become the world champion of badminton by beating the world number one men’s singles player and the top seed Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei.

"I apologise to Malaysia for I know that the whole country was behind me. I tried my best but it was not to be and I hope that they will forgive me," said Chong Wei.

Adcock and Bankier - ranked 20th in the world - beat four seeded pairs en route to the final, where they were beaten 21-15 21-7 by China's Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei.
